This paddle is made from curly maple, a light and durable wood. The process here is exactly the same as finishing a regular paddle except for the added step of applying an aniline dye immediately after the initial sanding of the raw wood. Because the dye is water based, an additional step is necessary. The moisture will raise the fibers or wood grain, and this must be sanded smooth again. After this, the paddle is finished normally with a completely waterproof epoxy. The coloured curly grain captures and reflects the light ripples on a calm lake.
